Cobra Kai's Final Scene with fun Back to the Future Easter Egg!
The final scene of Cobra Kai’s last episode delivered a perfect callback to The Karate Kid (1984), but with a hilarious twist. Fans will remember the iconic moment when Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) impresses Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) by catching a fly with chopsticks. In Cobra Kai’s final scene, Daniel is sharing a meal with his longtime rival-turned-friend Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka)—only for Johnny to channel his “strike first” instincts and simply swat the fly with his hand before Daniel even has a chance.
But beyond the nostalgic reference, this scene also packed a major Easter egg.
Just before the camera shifts focus to Daniel and Johnny, two men at the bar are overheard discussing the idea of a Back to the Future TV series. Keen-eyed fans quickly recognized these men as Cobra Kai co-creators Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz, and their conversation was packed with hints:
“So the show would be set in Hill Valley, alternate 1985,” Hurwitz muses. “All we need are Wilson, Thompson, and Zane, and we’ve got the green light.”
“Billy’s a friend,” Heald responds. “Guy did an art piece for my foyer. It’s an easy call to make. I feel like why not get Crispin, too? Maybe Mike to direct? We can blow this thing up.”
For Back to the Future fans, these names are a dead giveaway. They’re referencing franchise icons Thomas F. Wilson (Biff), Lea Thompson (Lorraine McFly), Billy Zane (Biff’s gang member Match), Crispin Glover (George McFly), and a potential director—Michael J. Fox himself.
So, Is a Back to the Future Series Actually Happening?
Naturally, this scene sparked speculation: Are the masterminds behind Cobra Kai setting their sights on Back to the Future next? When asked about it at SCAD TVfest, Hurwitz downplayed the moment, telling PEOPLE:
“That’s just us having fun. We know that the Back to the Future franchise is something that’s very closely guarded—and for good reason. If they ever decided they wanted to have a sequel series, then we’d be all-in.”
Still, Heald seemed open to the idea, adding:
“Everything I’ve read about them makes it seem like they’re looking for somebody to come in and pitch them an idea, so we’ll see.”
And at the Cobra Kai finale event, Heald doubled down:
“Everything I’ve read and everything I understand—and maybe I haven’t checked the trades in a couple of weeks—but the Bobs [Back to the Future co-creator Bob Gale and director Robert Zemeckis] want this to happen. They’ve been asking for years for somebody to come in and revolutionize the Back to the Future universe. And I say, who better than us? But it’s really up to them at the end of the day.”
Of course, Bob Gale has been vocal about his opposition to a fourth Back to the Future film, famously dropping an unfiltered “f--- you” to the idea in past interviews. When asked about that, Heald joked:
“It’s the chase. They’re definitely negging us… That’s how the union is born.”
Beyond Back to the Future: What’s Next for the Cobra Kai Creators?
Even if a Back to the Future reboot isn’t in the cards, the Cobra Kai team isn’t ruling out tackling other beloved franchises. At SCAD TVfest, Schlossberg teased:
“It’s not always so easy, you know. There are rights and creative people involved who don’t want to do anything. But we’re hovering around like potential evil real estate tycoons ready to take whatever.”
At the Cobra Kai premiere, Hurwitz hinted that they could bring their magic touch to another nostalgic property:
“Whether it’s Back to the Future or some other property from the ’80s or ’90s that we loved, this was a dream come true for us. Making Cobra Kai is everything we would’ve wanted it to be. And we weren’t just fans of The Karate Kid, we’re fans of lots of other properties from our childhood.”
Schlossberg chimed in:
“SpaceCamp, Iron Eagle, all the things.”
“Ghostbusters. I mean, there are so many things that would be great,” concluded Hurwitz.
So while a Back to the Future series may not be a done deal, one thing’s for sure—these guys aren’t done reinventing classic franchises just yet.
